Marlyne "Marzi" Kaplan's Obituary
Marlyne “Marzi” Weiss Kaplan passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2015. She was born in 1936 in New Jersey to Gertrude Weiss Vendeland and William Weiss (predeceased). Moving to Miami in 1946, she graduated Miami Senior High School (1954), University of Miami (UM) summa cum laude (B.Ed.1958), Florida Atlantic University (M.A. 1975), and UM School of Law (J.D. 1981). As a life-long student and teacher of language, literature, and the law, Marzi inspired many: first, as an elementary school teacher; later, as a professor at St.Thomas and UM law schools. In between, Marzi founded the S. Fla. Poetry Institute, wrote and published poetry and non-fiction, sat on the editorial board of the FL Bar Journal, and was the Poet Laureate of the City of Hollywood. She also served as Placement Director of UM School of Law. Marzi’s passions included literature, theater, music and film, manifested in her roles as founder, leader or contributor to book and poetry groups, film festivals, and book fairs. In later years, she served on the Carbonell Theater Awards Committee.Marzi loved engaging with people from all walks of life. Her greatest love, however, was family, and she was its beloved matriarch. She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Douglas Kaplan, their children Russell (Lisa), Hilary Gitlitz (Daniel), Karen Siegel (William), and grandchildren Lilly, Kate, Conrad, Carley, Charlie and Henry, as well as sisters Judith Ford and Tobi Kaiser (Michael).Services will take place on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 18840 W. Dixie Hwy., N. Miami Beach.
