Maurice H. Laszlo, MD's Obituary
Maurice H. Laszlo, MD, was born on January 28th, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Adolph and Helen Laszlo, and died in Aventura, FL on June 21st, 2024 at the age of 96. He attended Townsend Harris High School in NYC and graduated from NYU College of Arts and Sciences in 1946 at the age of 18. He was awarded the MD degree from the Rosalind Franklin University / Chicago Medical School in 1952. He did his postgraduate training at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, NY. He won a fellowship in cardiology, awarded by the NIH, and completed his training in cardiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL in 1959. His medical training was interrupted by two years of service in the US Public Health Service from 1954 to 1956. He met the love of his life, Phyllis Kandel, of Miami Beach, while stationed in Philadelphia, where she was completing her senior year at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. They were married April 29, 1956, and embarked on starting a family with the birth of three wonderful children: Michael, Andy, and Karen. This idyllic marriage ended in August 2009 with the death of Phyllis at the age of 74. In the 1960s, Dr. Laszlo started a group practice of internal medicine and cardiology in North Miami Beach. He left that group in 1988 and joined the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, where he practiced Preventive Cardiology until retiring in May 2020. He was board certified in both internal medicine and cardiology and served on the voluntary faculty of the University of Miami as Clinical Professor of Medicine for most of his career. In 1972, his peers elected him President of the Dade County Medical Association. In 1976, his medical school awarded him the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his inspiring leadership in medicine. He served on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners from 1990 to 1994. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He was a caring, compassionate, and empathetic physician who served as a role model for students, house staff, and colleagues. He loved classical music (especially Mahler) and grand opera (especially Wagner). He was an avid reader of good literature. His mantra for maintaining good health was regular exercise and sustaining normal weight. Above all, he loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his sister-in-law, Joan Worton, and brother-in-law, Stan Worton, MD; his gifted and accomplished children: Michael
(Elisa) Laszlo, Andy (Lillian) Laszlo, and Karen (Rob) Keller, MD; his adoring grandchildren: Michelle (Peter Horner) Laszlo, Nicole Laszlo, Arianna Laszlo, David Laszlo, Josh Keller, and Will Keller; many nieces and nephews; and his longtime loving and devoted companion, Wendy Rothfield.
